We only get one chance to save our planet

We only get one chance to save our planet

Re: “Bad times for planet Earth”, (The Nation, Dec 31, 2017)

This article deserves to be updated with references to the One Planet Summit which took place in Paris in December 2017 and was attended by more than 60 heads of state and government. Over 2000 participants from both the public and private sectors, including investors, businesses, governments and local authorities focused on sustainable finance as a key driver to accelerate the transition towards a low carbon economy, and to mobilise the required funds to mitigate and adapt to climate change as a fundamental prerequisite to saving our planet. An important idea emphasised during the summit was that we need policymakers and central banks, stock exchanges, pension funds, rating agencies and all financial actors to align investments with the needs for climate action and sustainable development.
The year 2018 is expected to demonstrate to what extent ideas, proposals and commitments formulated during a significant event of multilateral diplomacy might be fully or partially implemented, bearing in mind that there is no Plan B to save our planet.
