Airport taxi system is fantastic – then you get to the taxi

What a great taxi system implemented at Suvarnabhumi Airport: get your numbered ticket, walk to the parking slot, load your stuff and go. The queuing is minimised and everything is automated.

The problem is what happens next. About 30 per cent of the taxis are stinking and filthy. Passengers can walk 100 metres or more with all their luggage only to find a stinking taxi. Then you have the choice of either getting in and taking a stinky journey or refusing and walking all the way back to get a new ticket. Of course, the new ticket number could take you to another filthy taxi.
Solution: Inspect taxis at the airport entrance and monitor inspectors so that they don’t close one eye for “friendly” cabbies.
Even if the system is great, if the airport management fails to take much-needed action, passengers will be left with a bad feeling just from the first steps they take in Thailand.
