Animals swallowed in a morality gap

Animals swallowed in a morality gap

Re: “Vegan line is unconvincing”, Have Your Say, January 29.

Robin Grant maintains that the morality of raising animals for food is for each of us to decide, based on our views of what constitutes morality. But, could the enjoyment of eating steaks, cheese, eggs etc be a major influencing factor in our decision?
If we are perfectly honest with ourselves, can we think of any logical reason why it should be moral to needlessly kill some species (cows, pigs, chickens etc) yet immoral to needlessly kill another species (humans) when all of these beings value their lives and none wants to be killed?
And do we honestly believe it can be moral to needlessly condemn certain species to lives of imprisonment, sexual abuse and agonising mutilations, yet immoral to do the same to another species?
If everyone in the world lost their sense of taste, I wonder how much it would affect their “moral views”.
