Churchill’s Muslim revelation changed the course of history

Churchill’s Muslim revelation changed the course of history

Re: “Churchill was forthright about Islam – and many other things”, February 22.

A person’s views can change as they grow older, and this was the case with Mr Churchill. He was quick to realise that the Allies could not win World War II without the support of Muslims and Muslim nations. He acknowledged that fact in a letter to Franklin D Roosevelt, the American president.
The Middle East was a vital source of oil and it was essential to retain control of the Suez Canal. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims were recruited unto the British Indian Army. Without the British Indian Army the Japanese would not have been resisted and later pushed out of Burma (Myanmar, as it is now called).
Anyway, “Darkest Hour”, the latest Churchill biopic, is a great movie. I saw it at the Lido, a cinema sadly past its glory days.
