Re: “Can old English words tell us something new about Thailand?”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

I would rather take David Brown’s fun approach to the English language than Doctor Frank’s archaic one. The latter obviously writes solely to impress native English-speaking readers, even though The Nation is probably aimed at the international community in Thailand.
Most people buy a newspaper to read the news, and not as a study aid – and especially not to study archaic English. Using fancy words in the way letter-writers David Brown way or the Beasleys do is fun and graspable for us average beings. But this kind of language would appear totally ridiculous and misplaced anywhere else in the newspaper. Nor are egalitarian-minded readers of 2018 impressed by such writers.
