Sustainable development and the rule of law

Sustainable development and the rule of law

Re: “State of rule of law in Asia”, The Nation, March 1.

Beyond the Rule of Law Index published by the World Justice Project, it is useful to remember that the promotion and the defence of the rule of law is a universal objective clearly reflected in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by consensus at the United Nations Summit on September 25, 2015.
This comprehensive document contains 16 references to the rule of law and expresses the belief of 193 members of the UN that sustainable development cannot be realised without peace and security; and peace and security will be at risk without sustainable development.
The 2030 Agenda recognises the need to build peaceful and inclusive societies that provide equal access to justice and that are based on respect for human rights (including the right to development). The foundation of such societies is effective rule of law and good governance at all levels, and transparent, effective and accountable institutions.
The document identifies factors which give rise to violence, insecurity and injustice, such as inequality, corruption, poor governance and illicit financial and arms flows.
From this perspective, the 2030 Agenda specifically requests all countries to promote the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all.
