‘Good old days’ anything but

Without wishing to be the bearer of bad tidings, I feel that modern-day Thais’ love for a soap opera set over 300 years ago would have its bubble burst if any sort of reality was portrayed instead of the fantasy world that TV brings.

In those “good old days”, most people lived miserable lives dedicated to fighting for and providing payment to violent war-making rulers. Life expectancy was short, many children never made it to age 5, and common sickness often led to death. People went unwashed, didn’t own fine silks or jewellery, never had 26 types of skin-whitening cream to choose from and slept on straw. TV might provide some good entertainment, but it often lacks the reality and awfulness of the times. I wish the present, middle-class Bangkok viewer good luck if they think they’re ready for another try at historical life. Only a crazy politician could want to relive that.
