Doi Suthep case is as much about politics as malfeasance

Re: “What’s behind the sudden outcry over Doi Suthep project?”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

Somsak Pola asks why the people of Chiang Mai did not raise a ruckus years ago when workers started clearing the forest for the Doi Suthep Courts of Justice housing project.
My best guess would be that most people in Chiang Mai have only just got wind of the project. The project has been kept very discreet until just recently – when 95 per cent of the construction work had been completed.
Whether this protest has a political edge or not is a matter of opinion.
Khun Somsak could also ask how and why the Klong Dan wastewater treatment corruption case got started in Samut Prakan a decade ago. That project has been called the “mother of all corruption cases” because it involved the largest sum of money in our country’s modern history.
In that case, politics were as much involved as corruption, weren’t they?
