Jesus apparently loved his fish

Re: “History shows atheists also fond of dogmatism,” Have Your Say, June 23.

Despite its headline, this letter has nothing to do with atheism or dogmatism, but has everything to do with trying to prove that Jesus was a vegetarian.
Ian Martin implies this, and also implies (he doesn’t claim it outright) that Jesus may have been an Essene. I don’t know much about the Essenes, except they had a community at Qumran. If Jesus was an Essene, I wonder why he didn’t stay at Qumran. The gospels portray him as a very articulate figure, and if he had been an Essene I’m sure he would have told us so.
The passage Ian quotes omits the verse right before it: “And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, ‘Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?’” (Mark 14: 12.) It is not clear who “they” were who sacrificed the lamb – surely Jesus himself did not butcher the poor animal. But it is for sure that the lamb was killed, and that Jesus participated in the feast. It is not recorded that he abstained, saying, “Pass the bread, but no mutton for me; I am, verily, a vegan.” If he had not eaten the lamb, it would have been such a noteworthy omission from the ritual that the evangelists surely would have mentioned it.
Four-footed comestibles aside, we have fairly solid evidence that Jesus was a piscatore. He not only ate fish, he encouraged others to eat them. In John 6:5-14, he feeds 5,000 people from five loaves and two fish. In John 21: 4-14, after the resurrection, he tells the disciples where to drop their net for a big catch. They catch 153 fish (John is often very precise). Jesus himself cooks them (some of them, anyway) and feeds them to the disciples.
In sum, if Jesus, contrary to orthodox Jewish tradition, was a vegetarian, surely he would have said so, and there would be some record of his having taught vegetarianism. “You shall not eat meat, for verily, the animals also have feelings; and by doing so you will arouse the wrath of Eric Bahrt and Jenny Moxham.” He also would not have partaken of the Passover lamb or fed fish to his disciples. I am sorry if this screed has annoyed A Bangkok Atheist with more boring god stuff about what to eat, but fish is good for you, Bang: Jesus says so.
