The Inthanon lady’s slipper orchid (Paphiopedilum villosum) is preparing for its annual bloom, offering nature lovers another reason to explore the mountain during the cool season.
For many travellers, Phu Kradueng is defined by waiting for first light at Pha Nok Aen, watching the sun set from Pha Mak Duk or photographing the vivid red maple leaves that brighten the landscape.
Yet beyond these familiar scenes, the park’s long forest trails conceal another natural attraction. Growing on large tree branches and rocky surfaces in the montane evergreen forest is the Inthanon lady’s slipper, a rare wild orchid whose unusual form and ecological value have made it a prized sight for plant enthusiasts.
A closer look at Phu Kradueng’s hidden orchid
At first glance, the orchid’s foliage appears simple, with long, flat, strap-like leaves in a fresh shade of green. A closer look, however, reveals clusters of tiny purple spots concentrated around the base of the leaves.
The flower is the real showpiece. A single bloom rises on a stalk around 20–30 centimetres long, with a reddish-brown upper sepal marked by delicate patterns. Its side petals curve gently inwards, while pale purple hairs add another distinctive detail around the base of the flower.
Its pollen is also unusual, forming firm, translucent yellow masses rather than displaying the sticky texture commonly associated with pollen in many flowers. Together, these details give the orchid its intricate and unmistakable appearance.
Where and when to see it
Finding the Inthanon lady’s slipper is as much about timing as location. The orchid favours cool, humid montane forests at elevations of around 1,200–1,500 metres above sea level.
In Thailand, it can be found in high mountain ranges in the North and Northeast. Its wider natural range also extends through India, southern China, Myanmar and parts of Indochina.
The flowers bloom only once a year, generally from December to February, making the cool season an ideal time for nature-focused travellers hoping to encounter the orchid on Phu Kradueng.
