Buriram bag title, vow to improve

BURIRAM UNITED coach Bozidar Bandovic vowed his side would get even stronger next season after they secured the Thai League 1 title on Saturday.

The defending champions beat Police Tero 2-0 to extend their lead over arch-rivals Bangkok United to nine points. With 75 points and a better head-to-head record over second-place Bangkok, Buriram have won the league with three games still to play.

“I have to thank everyone in the team for their hard work. ... Winning the league two years in a row is never easy but we have done very well in every game. This is the best day for us,” said the Serbian coach.

Diogo Luis Santos of Brazil and Korrakot Wiriyaudomsiri scored the two goals that clinched the title for the Thunder Castle. Buriram will play Pattaya United next Saturday, Air Force Central on October 3 and Ratchaburi FC on October 7. Regardless of what happens in those games, Buriram will hold the trophy aloft for a record sixth time, after triumphing in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017.

“I also have to thank the fans for their support. ... We will keep working hard in the remaining three games and other Cup matches,” added Bandovic.

“We will get even stronger next year, our young players will grow and have more experience, like Sasalak [Haiprakhon], Ratthanakorn [Maikami], Supachok [Sorachat], and Supachai [Jaided] who have stepped up to become first [team] players. They should be proud, as champions for the second time,” Bandovic said.

With Ubon UMT and Air Force already guaranteed of relegation to League 2, Chainat Hornbill, Police Tero and Navy are battling to avoid becoming the third demoted team.
