Communist Party has destroyed China’s cultural wisdom

Re: “Immortal answer to hate-filled opinions of Chinese culture”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

Curiously enough Yingwai Suchaovanich mentions the legendary crazy monks Hanshan and Shih Te in his last-ditch attempt to champion contemporary Chinese culture. I once owned a large ink painting of these two inseparable pals grinning out of their obscure past, as well as a volume of their “Cold Mountain” poems. I cherished those examples of Chinese culture and do not hate the Chinese people. The important distinction is that I hate what Chinese communism has done and continues to do. The ancient wisdom no longer illuminates present-day China in any significant ways because the Communist Party has oppressed and enslaved the Chinese people for decades.
Seeing the results of their parasitism, Western-style free market enterprise and a managed economy were introduced and the Chinese people promptly lifted themselves out of poverty.
Western economic, cultural and scientific thinking combined with the hard work of Chinese people did this. The Communist Party merely copied the West and got off the people’s backs a bit. The great influences of the past have been lost or destroyed and what remains is a mere shell of civilisation obsessed with money, exclusively worshipping the god of good luck and absent a heart. What would Hanshan and Shih Te say about Chinese Buddhist monasteries being traded on the stock exchange or the Dalai Lama being portrayed as a terrorist?
It does not bode well for the future. And as to Chinese scholars, they are like breakfast cereal, my main source of fibre.
