Khun Yingwai Suchaovanich teased Michael Setter that 161,990,000 is not China’s death toll from state murders, but the distance from Earth to the moon.
My critical mind then asked, “161,990,000 kilometres or miles or what?” A distance must have a unit. Since the moon’s orbit around Earth is elliptical, the average distance from Earth to the moon is 384,400km, or 238,856 miles. Or could it be 161,900,000 li, a Chinese unit of distance which is equal to about 0.5km? Still it doesn’t add up.
So I took the liberty of establishing a new unit of linear measurement called the “Ying”; 1 Ying is equal to 2.37 metres. The distance from Earth to the moon is 383,400km, equal to 161,990,000 Yings (384,400km multiplied by 1,000m/km and divided by 2.37m/Ying). Now that makes sense.
