Thai people fear communism for a very good reason

Re: “FFP politician’s father was a communist ... so what?”, Have Your Say, June 20.

Robin Grant fails to recognise the fact that the threats of communism in his home country – which I presume to be England – and here in Thailand are two very different things.
During communist Khmer Rouge rule in Cambodia between 1975 and 1979, the sleep of Thais was disturbed by terrifying nightmares because communist soldiers were at our eastern border – about 200 kilometres away from Bangkok.
A country such as England has never felt any such fear because its borders have always been hundreds of kilometres away from any communist country and army.
When communists take over a country with a monarchy, the head of state and his/her family are either thrown out or murdered.
In Russia, on July 17, 1918, new communist leader Vladimir Lenin ordered the massacre of Russia’s last Emperor, Nicholas II, together with his wife and all their five children. All of them were corralled into a house cellar outside Moscow and shot dead.
These are the reasons why Robin Grant’s attitude towards communists and communism is different from that of the Thai people.
