Secure that smart-phone

@ripmilla, aka tech addict Supadej Sutthiphongkanasai, is an MC for TV's 'Beartai Hitech'

These days you can do so much more with your phone than just call friends. You can check your e-mail, instantly update your Facebook status and broadcast your news on Twitter. Check your bank account? No problem.

So, what if someone stole that handy doorway to your life tomorrow. You did secure your phone by enabling the password, right? You didn't!

That's bad news, because your thief hasn't just taken your phone. He's taken every service that goes with it. Now think seriously: did you have bank account information on the phone? You may lose all your money.

Talking of security, have you ever received forwarded e-mail of pornography or celebrity sex scandals? Ever wondered how those images leaked out onto the Internet so easily? The reason is that these kinds of photo are often taken with phones, then forgotten instead of being deleted. Phones get broken and have to be sent to the repair shop. But the repairman may do more than just fix it. He may try to recover your memory card with a special program that restores those naughty files you thought you had deleted. And you might be surprised at how many risqué pictures we take these days.

So how can we protect our data from leaking into the wrong hands? Don't worry - it's easy!

_ Preventing someone getting access to your phone: You just have to enable the password before using it. This feature is easily enabled on any smart-phone, whether it be an iPhone, Android, Blackberry or whatever. You'll find it a hassle to use at first, but persevere and you'll get used to it. You will quickly find that it is both secure and easy to access.

_ Preventing someone recovering your deleted files: Make use of software that completely erases your data, such as File Shredder. This type of program deletes and destroys the files so that they can't be recovered. But for a 100-per-cent guarantee that your intimate pictures never leak out, the answer is not to take any with your phone in the first place.

If you haven't done it yet, now is the time to secure your phone. That way, the next time you lose it, it will only be your phone that's gone, not your whole life.
