Thais don't listen to correct pronunciation

Re: "Problems with teaching English in Thailand", Letters, September 18

Bad pronunciation is a major problem when Thais speak English, because, we've never learned to read phonetic symbols, which are intimidating just to look at. But it should be easy now, since modern dictionaries start to use simple English alphabets instead of those cryptic figures. Moreover, there are many free online dictionaries with audio pronunciation just a click away.

Another problem is that we don't listen; we pronounce words the way we see them, usually in monotone. Consequently, English-speaking people don't understand us because of our bad pronunciation, and, conversely, we don't understand them because of their proper pronunciation.
