The good old days

The furniture made and sold at Cafe No 9 will remind you how comfortable you used to be

Shopping for home furnishings is like playtime on bustling Soi Ekamai, where well-stocked stores crowd in with great offers, and among the newest is Cafe No 9, which specialises in retro wooden furniture from Mod X Mobler.

Designer Prapat Srithongkul opened No 9 to show off his excellent taste in classic designs from the 1950s to the 1980s. They’re the reason he gave up his career in finance to create his own collection of dining-table chairs five years ago.

Mod X Mobley is Prapat’s brand. The name connotes “modern express” furniture of English and Danish origins. That concept, in those decades, he says, was the epitome of function meeting aesthetics.

His stuff – perfect for compact spaces – is based on the Scandinavian style, meaning simple and smart. Most is lightweight and bright in tone. “My big brother has always owned the popular second-hand Y 50 furniture,” Prapat says of the brand often imported from northern Europe.

He and his wife and a friend set out five months ago to turn a tranquil house into a cafe and furniture showroom. Yes, you can enjoy hot coffee and snacks while browsing among the lounges, rocking chairs, armchairs with ottomans, bar stools, sofas, cabinets, coffee tables, sideboards, nesting tables, vanity tables, partition shelves, night stands and mirrors.

To ensure top quality, Prapat opts for teak, oak and ash as his main materials, all from overseas. He in turn exports his furniture to Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and Malaysia, and also accepts custom order.
