A powerful punch for a low price

Acer's stylish seven-inch tablet is great for gaming and making the most of multimedia

A new powerful seven-inch tablet computer that feels satisfyingly sturdy in your hand yet is just 13.1 millimetres thick and weighs a mere 470 grams, the Acer Iconia Tab A100 is great for enjoying games and multimedia on the go.
It’s powered by the fast NVIDIA Tegra 250 dual core processor running at 1 GHz and it comes with a high-definition multi-touch LED-backlit screen with 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution.
It has only 16 gigabytes storage though that can be expanded with a microSD card and comes with 5 megapixel rear camera and 2 megapixel front camera.
The A100 has good sound for playing games and music and video clips thanks to its Dolby Mobile speakers.
It also has all the necessary ports – a mini USB port for connecting to a PC, an expansion port for connecting to a dock and a micro HDMI port for playing movies or sending displays to a large-screen LCD TV.
It is also pre-loaded with clear.fi, the Acer media sharing system that enables seamless integration of the device with the home clear.fi environment. The clear.fi allows the tablet, once linked wirelessly to your home Wi-Fi route, to easily access, play and share multimedia across the home network. The clear.fi will show the list of computers on your network, from which you can access music and video files from shared folders.
The A100 is intuitive to navigate as its applications are in four main content usage groups: Games Zone, eReading, Multimedia, and SNS. Icons to access the four groups are located on the first home screen.
Access the Games Zone and you can download more games from Android Market and TegraZone Games. TegraZone has both paid and free games optimised from the A100’s processor and chipset.
The A100 is really powerful for game playing. Its NVIDIA processor comes with NVIDIA GeForce GPU with Flash 10.1 support, which ensures stunning graphics for optimised HD viewing, 3D and console-quality gaming, and multimedia playback.
I downloaded the free Dungeon Defenders First Wave from TegraZone to try on the A100. The 3D-perception game looked great and the graphics were fluid.
The eReading group provides LumiRead and Kobo ebook readers for you to download or purchase ebooks to read.
The SNS group provides Acer SocialJogger so you can access both Facebook and Twitter at the same time.
The Multimedia Room provides three applications – YouTube, MusicA and nemoPlayer. MusicA is fun to use. It listens to the music being played and gives you information about the song. The nemoPlayer is for displaying photos and playing music and videos.
The A100 comes with a standard 3.5mm stereo jack. I tested it with Sony premium earphones and the music really sound great with the nemoPlayer.
And best of all, this tablet is very reasonably priced. You’ll find it at most shops for Bt12,900.
