We still have dance, art, jazz

The big news in Bangkok culture these days is that some events have NOT been cancelled or postponed due to the floods. Here are three of them.

India’s Sutra Dance Theatre is presenting the classical piece “Sutrarasa” by Ramli Ibrahim and January Low at the Alliance Francaise on South Sathorn Road tonight and Saturday.
Premiered at New Delhi’s international dance festival last year, “Sutrarasa” traces the evolution of the company’s Odissi repertoire – entailing works commissioned by masters of the genre, Gajendra Kumar Panda and the late Deba Prasad Das.
“Sutrarasa” was a hit on a tour
of Dutch cities last month. Here you can see it both nights at 9.30pm.
Tickets are Bt400 (Bt250 for students and Alliance members) at the door or via (02) 670 4231. Learn more at www.Alli-ance-Francaise.or.th.

Bangkok-based British artist Ralph Kiggell will open “Sun Room”, an exhibition of his woodblock prints, on Saturday at 5pm at the Thavibu Gallery on Silom Road.
Kiggell, 51, depicts tropical nature, remarkably lit and in vivid colour, but has recently been introducing more science to the equation with “bio” prints. Sunlight nurtures his images of flora and fauna, including primitive organisms, so that the gallery becomes a sunroom, an indoor garden and a laboratory.
The woodblock itself is obviously natural, while the paper is handmade from the bark of the mulberry tree. The prints are made without a press.
Trained in Japan, Kiggell has lived in Thailand for 12 years and held residencies at Bangkok University and China’s Sichuan Institute of Fine Arts.

Pattaya’s Silverlake Vineyard is hosting the Dutch Swing College Band on Saturday night for a fund-raiser, “Relief for Thailand’s Flood Victims”.
Silverlake Entertainment, the Dutch Embassy, the International Jazz Festival Alliance Foundation, the City of Pattaya and the Tourism Authority of Thailand are presenting the show, which also features the Thai band Hank the Groove.
Tickets cost Bt1,000 at the door. Find out more at (089) 896 5166.
