In shining good health

The spa at the new InterContinental Hua Hin Resort anoints guests with gold

A noble addition to the royal seaside getaway down south, the new InterContinental Hua Hin Resort treats its guests like princes and princesses.

It too draws architectural inspiration from King Rama V’s stunning Maruekhathaiyawan Summer Palace, its beautiful wooden fittings and furnishings delicately carved. The ceilings are high. The chandeliers are brass. There is luxury in every detail.

Magnifying the appeal for Bangkok refugees keen for some cooling beach time and a bit of pampering, there’s a delectable Sunday brunch as well.

The Spa InterContinental shares the hotel’s regal charm. The enclave of relaxation and rejuvenation is relatively small but completely shuts out the hectic world and suits every need with treatments like the 90-minute Oriental Signature Massage for Bt4,500.

Blood circulation is boosted with shiatsu finger pressure and stretching at key points, Swedish methods are applied to eliminate physical tension and the swift and delicate touch of Balinese massage deeply relaxes the muscles.

At times it can get a little rigorous, but if you want only gentle pampering, just ask the therapist to ease up on the shiatsu and focus on the more relaxing Swedish style. The final Balinese segment of the treatment is nothing but lulling.

Rather than oil, the masseuses use warmed Butterfly Pea Balm, with a creamy, rich texture that leaves the skin fully moisturised. The warmth enhances its aromatherapy essence to get the blood moving.

Other treatments offer a choice among three massage oils – Relax (made with lavender and lime), Recharge (rosemary and pine) and Detoxify (geranium and sandalwood).

If you’re looking a bit glum in the mirror lately, try the 90-minute Golden Revitaliser Signature Facial for Bt7,500, in which your features are coated in a soft 24-carat gold mask.

Gold has long been used to bolster the skin’s natural elasticity, since it’s believed to have anti-wrinkle properties. The Golden Revitaliser also employs massage to coax out the underlying toxins and accelerate cell renewal. By helping the blood circulate, oxidation damage is reversed.

The treatment suite is pleasantly quiet, the music and other background sounds not intrusive like at some spas, but just right, letting you totally relax.

The spa’s menu has a lot to choose from – detox, de-stress, anti-ageing, foot massage, energising, balancing and more – with prices starting at Bt1,800.
