So if ‘Hugo’, will you go?
That earnest little indie cinema called House tries its best, but we don’t get to see all of the Oscar-nominated films in Thailand. Not even the chance of Hollywood glory is enough to guarantee good box-office returns for something like, say, “Hugo”, so local theatres give some titles a miss.
“Hugo” is too big a deal, though. The Paris-set childhood adventure is directed by Martin Scorsese and has 11 nominations, including best picture.
There had been grumbling online that United International Pictures wasn’t going to bring it to Thailand. This came as a surprise to UIP, which still hadn’t decided, due to the poor attendance figures in the US.
Never mind. Since the Thai fans online were in such an uproar, “Hugo” is now booked. You can see it on February 16 – 10 days before the Oscars – and since Scorsese insists on 3D screenings, it will only be at the Paragon Cineplex and SF World Cinema.
The ball is now in the fans’ court. They asked for it and now they’d better show up in droves, with Bt300 in every hand.
Pen Tor unveiled
With the Channel 3 sitcom “Pen Tor” soon to end after seven years, the whole cast paid a visit to “Tee Sib” to talk about their long journey together.
They played a family on the show all those years and they became a real family in the process, so the interviews were a joy to watch, and many secrets were disclosed.
We didn’t know, for example, that several episodes came straight out of cast members’ actual experiences. Or that Pen Tor – the lead character played by Shahkrit Yamnarm – was named after a crewmember’s newborn baby. Pen Tor and his sister Por Jai loaned their famous names in turn to the toy dogs on the Channel 3 soap “Sam Num Nua Thong”. Evidently a lot of pets and children have those names now.
Check out Part 2 of the “Tee Sib” cast party next Tuesday at 10.30pm.
