A cafe called Desire

The scones and tea seem to have taken over this home-decor shop, and no wonder

A new hangout for families and office workers, the Desire bakery and cafe refuses to be ignored with its attractive selection of scrumptious homemade desserts and fresh “English-style” beverages.

Sasina Leabchantra put her experience in stage design to good use when she and her friends opened Desire in August. It occupies a white wooden house in a shady courtyard filled with flowers and angel sculptures.

The interior is fitted out with comfy vintage-style wooden chairs, sofas and tables in pastel shades, enough room for 20 diners.

“We actually launched Desire as a home-decor brand and this was the showroom,” Sasina says, “but we also served free drinks and desserts. So many people said they liked our sweets that we got inspired to start a cafe.”

The kitchen is the responsibility of Sasina, who lived in Britain for many years and has always loved making meals and desserts for family and friends. Her pastries soft and layered, in accordance with traditional English recipes. She uses imported fresh fruit and jams. The ice cream comes from New Zealand.

A great mini-meal is the Bt175 set – two big scones served with smooth clotted cream and a choice of jam: strawberry, orange, raspberry or blueberry. Then there’s the luscious banana cake topped with vanilla ice cream for Bt120.

“The traditional English scones must be soft and served with clotted cream,” Sasina says. “I make mine with top-quality butter and eggs.”

Other top sellers are a yummy brownie with vanilla ice cream (Bt120), blueberry cheese pie (Bt65) and refreshing peach parfait (Bt125).

To quench the thirst, Sasina recommends a Bt90 glass of aromatic iced green tea latte or an Bt80 pot of Dilmah leaf tea. There’s also Americano, cappuccino, mocha and latte, blended from Arabica and Robusta coffee beans.
