I share Roland Watson’s view of the events of 2006 and the relief that he felt when the coup happened peacefully and a criminal had been relieved of power. The red-shirt violence was postponed until after the foot soldiers from the North were recruited for the “Thailand Spring”. This allowed the red-shirt hooligans to change to the people’s revolt beloved of the BBC.
Sonthi’s motive for the coup has not been revealed. He was guided from above, but by whom he will not say. If it was an anti-Thaksin move it was badly planned and there was no concerted follow up to prosecute the TRT regime for their greed in office. Only the judiciary will know the truth of why that came about. Even Thaksin himself has got off lightly so far. He was allowed to return to Thailand and allowed to leave untried for many of his offences. If it was a pro-Thaksin move to save his team from repercussions of the averted red-shirt violence, it has worked perfectly and Sonthi is the man smoothing the path for Thaksin’s heroic return. Coincidence or what?
