Brits left a generally good legacy

Re: "British Empire helped to end communism", Letters, May 10.

It was pleasant to read of a non-Briton complimenting the British Empire for a change. Though I would not go bombastic in giving credit to it for the end of communism, its influence and satisfactory outcome are most obvious if we look around Asia of those former British colonies – Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The exception is Myanmar. Comparing with those French and Dutch former colonies, or even the country that is proud of not having ever been colonised, I concur with Al Eberhardt’s contention of some goodness of the British Empire.
Similarly, if we run through countries in Africa, one can also see its remnants of goodness. Even in America and Canada, Britishness certainly played a part in making those two countries great.
