The English Premiere League’s season ended on Sunday night, with one London charity 20,000 pounds (Bt1 million) richer thanks to wagering by a celebrity fan.
The money faucet was turned on by CNN talk-show host Piers Morgan. The former editor of the Daily Mirror, he’s had an ongoing love-hate relationship with philanthropist and media personality Lord Alan Sugar, and the two constantly trade barbs about their TV shows, number of followers and, of course, football.
Morgan is a die-hard Arsenal fan while Lord Sugar, former owner of Tottenham Hotspur, remains loyal to Arsenal’s No 1 rival in north London.
During Sunday night’s final matches, Morgan and Sugar were sparring on Twitter and decided that the fan of the team that finishes lower would have to donate 10,000 pounds to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.
The Spurs came in fourth, right behind Arsenal. As the final whistle blew, securing Arsenal’s 3-2 win over West Bromwich, Morgan tweeted his “frenemy”: “YEEEEESSSSSSS #Arsenal – great comeback. Write your cheque @Lord_Sugar 10k to @GreatOrmondSt #ChokingCockerels.”
But that wasn’t the end of it. Morgan is also known for his regular jabs at any players who are rivals of his beloved Arsenal. In particular, he always picks on French footballer Samir Nasri, who left Arsenal this season for Manchester City.
Nasri said in an interview that he believed he could win the championship trophy with Man City quicker than he could with the Gunners. So Morgan told him to put his money where his mouth is and made another 10,000 pounds wager to benefit the Great Ormond Street charity.
Manchester City went on to grab a dramatic last-minute 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers to seal their place at the top of the league.
“Most painful tweet of my life,” Morgan said. “Well done @SamNasri19 – I am sending a cheque to @GreatOrmondSt for 10k today.”
But Morgan still wasn’t finished, and he decided he needed to have a go at other footballers.
“Incredible by City – and easily worth 10k to see @WayneRooney, @rioferdy5 [Rio Ferdinand] @themichaelowen’s faces at the end,” he gleefully tweeted at the star players of former champions Manchester United, who came in second place thanks to City’s astonishing victory.
Although Morgan’s football tweets may irritate his followers, at least they’re for a good cause.
