Danai takes early holiday in Paris

Danai Udomchoke's return to Paris after five years away turned ugly yesterday after he managed to win just one game against Argentina's Martin Alund in a first-round defeat in the French Open qualifiers.

But the 6-1 6-0 loss should not have been a surprise for the country’s No 1 player, who has never won a match at Roland Garros. With his dislike of the surface, Danai had stayed away from clay tournaments for several years but decided to combine his French Open bid with a holiday to the capital with wife Charinthorn.“I didn’t have much expectations coming here because I haven’t played on clay since 2007. I just wanted to show my wife what the French Open is like,’’ said Danai, who lost his match in less than an hour.
Thailand still has Tamarine Tanasugarn in the women’s singles main draw and Noppawan Lertcheewagarn in the qualifying.
