Historic verdict should be lauded

I applaud the work of the Department of Special Investigations (DSI) and the courts that resulted in verdicts of death or life imprisonment for the police officers and a police lieutenant colonel for the premeditated murder of a 17-year-old during Thaksin

This verdict makes history, for the murderers had at least the tacit approval, if not encouragement, of their superiors to take any means deemed necessary to show results, and now the courts have shown that power must be ruled by law.
But one swallow does not make a spring. There are still an alleged 2,499 more killings to investigate from the war on drugs alone – and who can forget the 32 bodies of Krue Se, the 78 bodies of Tak Bai, or the four of Nong Chik? Why do the generals responsible continue to go free when they’ve disgraced the uniform they wear by their dishonourable deeds? Why do you, dear reader, continue to let Thaksin and Co and the Democrats exempt those in uniform from accountability by extending the Emergency Decree time and again and again, even though UN Special Rapporteur Philip Ashton said this decree “makes it possible for soldiers and police officers to get away with murder”?
You, dear reader, and I must continue to support the DSI and courts as they work to bring those in uniform under the rule of law.
