Always in the right

Re: "A whole lot more went wrong before and after the coup", Letters, August 20.

Let me ask: suppose a man was executed and later it turned out that he was completely innocent. Would the state admit that it had killed an innocent man? Of course not. Doing so would raise doubts regarding past and future executions and whether execution itself should be outlawed.
Same with every coup (18 so far). No one would ever admit that a coup was a mistake – it was always the fault of the prime minter who was ousted. A coup is irreversible, and so is an execution. Therefore, no state will ever admit that it wrongfully killed a man. Same with coup-makers never admitting their own booboos.
