The very informative and well-documented article by Stephen P Groff contains an optimistic message according to which if Myanmar makes the right moves at the right times, and maintains its strong commitment to reforms, a more prosperous future undoubtedly awaits Myanmar’s people.
However, some other important conditions have to be met in order to reach that goal. Myanmar needs a true spirit of union and a genuine transformational leadership. It requires the development of a strategic vision based on solidarity and an attractive view of the future able to persuade and mobilise the whole population.
In the past, at international level, a famous son of Myanmar, U Thant, Secretary-General of the United Nations for 10 years (1961- 1971) illustrated in an exemplary way the value of transformational leadership. He asserted that it is in our hands to channel the profound changes which are being brought about in our times toward the most fruitful directions, away from suffering, violence, and enmity.
At present, Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s great democratic icon, expresses legitimate hopes that the aspirations of her people can be fulfilled. As emphasised in her Nobel Lecture in Oslo, in June this year, as the potential of Myanmar is enormous, this should be nurtured and developed to create not just a more prosperous but also a more harmonious, democratic society where people can live in peace, security and freedom.
