Guy Baker, straightening the Chao Phraya River indeed! Is that an idea borrowed from a Road Runner cartoon?
Why do you think the Dutch have so many windmills? More than a quarter of the Netherlands lies below sea level, so from as early as the 13th century the Dutch started building windmills to be used as pumps to speed the flow along the canals and channels to lessen the chance of land, cities and towns becoming flooded.
Many of those windmills, albeit renovated, are still in use today. Others have been replaced by electric pumping stations.
The Dutch also invented the Polder system of flood control used by many countries throughout the world – Thailand of course being an exception.
Thailand still has much to learn about water flow and management, so calling in the foremost water engineers in the world, the Dutch, would go a long way towards solving the flooding problems.
That would prove to be much better than the mixed politician, mayor and “expert” that appears to be the Thai method of finding a solution. Perhaps they could even tap Baker for a wackier idea.
Even so, when expert help and advice is readily available, it still has to be done “the Thai way”.
