Sunday’s editorial on Australia’s and South Korea’s pending stints as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council bravely referred to them as “the two stable liberal democracies from Asia-Pacific”. While the meanings of “stable”, “liberal” and “democracy” can be debated, there is at least one other country in the region that clearly meets the criteria: New Zealand, which has served on the council three times, most recently in 1993-94, and is seeking a seat for 2015-16.
