THEIR SHOES SOUND GREAT

The Posso girls - DJs and clothing designers - tour the world with W Hotels

In the pursuit of all things creative, Posso has garnered worldwide attention as DJs and avant-garde designers. As DJs, the duo has performed at super clubs, fashion events and festivals all around the world. They played at Bangkok’s Elle Fashion Week, offering cutting-edge house sounds on the closing night.

Childhood friends Marylouise Pels and Vanessa Giovacchini of Posso launched their collaborative project of fashion-forward leather accessories, which then soon spawned to their collaboration in music. Pels has been a classically trained pianist since the age of seven while Giovacchini grew up singing and was a published poet by age 19.

Posso’s original music is a blend of piano house, blues, and electronic music with a live show consisting of Giovacchini singing lead vocals and Pels on keys and backup vocals as the duo DJ away house, disco, tech house and funk.

We had a little chat with the girls behind the deck.

How does it feel to be in Bangkok?
Giovacchini: There’s a really particular kind of energy here. We always take it as a good sign when a city has lots of fabulous and chic ladies and men. There’s an essence of freedom and playfulness here that isn’t quite like anywhere else.
Pels: The fashion is also quite forward and unique here. We’ve fallen in love with Milin.

Have you been here before?
Giovacchini: No this is our first time in Thailand!

How did you become DJs?
Giovacchini: Obsession, obsession, and more obsession. We are both classically trained in the arts and music so when we encountered dance music for the first time it was the most inspiring kind of feeling we ever experienced. Teaching yourself to DJ is like spiralling down a wormhole of ultimate discovery, which we think is why it has become so popular – it’s quite freeing to craft soundscapes.

What came first, DJing or designing?
Pels: We started Posso as a design project. We loved fashion and wanted to contribute something to the fashion world that was new and different, so we created various styles of leather spats – luxurious shoe covers – that later expanded into belts and purses. They were worn by Katy Perry, Rihanna and Victoria Beckham.

Do design and electronic music contribute to each other creatively?
Pels: If there’s anything that our music and design aesthetic have in common, it’s versatility. When we design a garment or accessory it’s important to us that it performs transformative qualities, is vintage-inspired, and is a classic piece with a feminine silhouette that will be a staple in your wardrobe.
For our Volcom spring 2012 collection we designed a wrap cardigan that can be worn multiple ways, is great for travel, and can be converted into a dress for evening.
Giovacchini: Our music has a similar style. We are huge disco heads and believe that dance music should be sexy, danceable and exhilarating, classic elements that are translated into new sounds, like good fashion that echoes vintage pieces.

How did you get involved with W Hotels?
Giovacchini: We DJ’d the maiden voyage of Holy Ship music festival cruise in the Bahamas last January with Jason Bentley, music supervisor of Los Angeles radio station KCRW. A few months later when W hotels global music director Michaelangelo L’Acqua asked his friend Jason what Los Angeles-based DJs would be a good fit for the 2012 W Hotel Burn Studios DJ Lab and he recommended us! Since then we’ve been all over with the W, from Ibiza to Bali to Paris!

What’s the similarity between you and W Hotels?
Pels: We love that the W is not only a hotel but also a supportive force and taste-maker for music, design and the arts. We feel right at home within this multifaceted brand as we have created Posso with the intention to be an outlet for all our creative pursuits from music to fashion to art. We feel a symbiosis by creating in all these forms and love being a part of the same with the W hotels.

What do you like most about being a DJ?
Giovacchini: Being able to travel and make people have fun and dance. Setting a mood and tone for a party is less of a job and more of a gift.

What’s the next plan for Posso?
Pels: We are in the studio making music and designing our own Posso clothing collection!
