Siam Discovery’s gigantic Christmas tree is drawing admiring gazes, but upon closer inspection many passersby are surprised to see it isn’t really a tree after all.
Designed by eco-friendly architect Singh Intrachooto, the eight-metre-tall holiday decoration is made from 50,000 recycled drinking-water bottles donated by Namthip.
The bottles were flattened and then compressed into star shapes. Caps have been strung together to form a twinkling string of lights. Other materials include recycled steel that’s covered in bubble wrap.
Forming a backdrop is the mall’s facade, which is decorated with bright LED balls and “mirror star” signs that add to the festive mood, especially at night. The visual feast will be on display until January 2.
