First, a false demand was created from hundreds of thousands of people who didn’t really want the car but enjoyed getting a Bt100,000 rebate – contradictory to being moderate. Second, the first reason to buy a car is a sufficient proof of unreasonableness. Third, some buyers had to return their cars after finding out that they couldn’t afford the monthly payments.
The government happily managed to get nearly 800,000 cars sold. Assume that each is four metres long. Putting them bumper to bumper, they would stretch for 3,200 kilometres. That’s about the distance from northernmost to southernmost Thailand – Chiang Tai to Narathiwat – and then back to Bangkok. This is just for parking. If you drove them, you would need at least three times this distance. Now it’s time to build that road.
