Keeping them out of the soup
Up to 73 million sharks are killed each year so their dorsal cartilage can be sliced off and made into shark’s-fin soup.
With the global population of these important creatures now in catastrophic decline, US Aid is sponsoring a campaign aimed at reducing the sale and consumption of shark fin in Thailand, with support of foreign and local artists and photographers.
The exhibition “100% Shark” at the WTF Gallery on Sukhumvit Soi 51 from February 21 to March 22 includes photos from Paul Hilton’s series on shark finning, which won a World Press Award last year. There are also recent images of an estimated 30,000 fins drying on urban rooftops.
Animal activist Jirayu Ekkul contributes underwater shots of sharks at leisure and an installation by an anonymous artist reflects on the mindless consumption that brings their doom. Silapakorn Kungsapichart will screen an educational video. Find out more at (02) 662 6246 or www.WTFBangkok.com.
