Only The Selected

Also among Siam Center's modern wonders of the shopping world, a vast array of exclusives

While the 300 shops at Siam Center spent Bt800 million on their own individual concepts for the mall’s renovation, a 300-square-metre multiple-brand store called The Selected, run by Siam Piwat – the operator of the mall, appeared on the third floor. Its lifestyle products offer an invigorating mix of technology, art, fashion and design.

“The 40 brands in The Selected were carefully selected to match the mall’s ‘ideaopolis’ concept – a convergence of inspiring ideas and experiences,” says the new store’s managing director, Charnchai Cherdchoothanakorn.
“Several of the brands are new to Thailand, while others offer limited editions in their product lines or ‘Absolute Siam’ collections that are available here exclusively.”
While New York’s trendy SoHo area was one of the main inspirations behind the mall’s interior design, The Selected takes its leads from the similarly gritty “industrial look”, using wood, leather and metal studs. It feels like a cool warehouse.
Male customers will love the sporty leather bags from Container, Timo’s swimwear and Gla’s natural spa products. Women who want to stand out in a crowd will appreciate the funky leather handbags and clutches by 31 Thanwa, perfect for clubbing, and the aromatic spa products by new brand Lakshimi Mantra.
Less a place for fun shopping than it is a “gallery” full of retail “artwork”, the store features craftsmen like Tithi Kutchamuch, who trained at London’s Royal College of Art. Her jewellery is functional as well as decorative, like the necklace with dangling – it resembles the skull and entrails of a parrot, tugged out of the bird’s “body” holder.
Love Lust London’s silver jewellery borrows details from the British capital’s iconic tourist attractions as its main motifs. Big Ben becomes the core of a necklace, the famed black cab rides a bracelet, and the London tube turns into a ring.
Fashionary’s sketchbook and diary are made for followers of haute couture, filled with information, figure templates, body measurements, a fabric dictionary, specs sheets and more. It’s the perfect tool for brainstorming, fast sketching and quick referrals.
Aiming to revitalise woodworking, designer collective Pana Objects offers a range of minimalist household decor and stationery that show off the natural beauty of wood. There’s a wall clock, a stationery set, wooden caps for your iPhone charger and an iPad stand.
Meanwhile Thinkk Studio’s wooden stationary set includes a simple desk lamp with a wood base and a single sheet of folded steel for the shade, and architect Duangrit Bunnag has a wooden foldable table called Fold, in four colours with a non-scratch top.
Leather brand Labrador’s eco-friendly Re-Labrador line is a selection of recycled leather bags and stationery that is simple yet functional.
