It is true that in 1913, the method of selecting US senators was changed from selection by state legislators to selection by popular vote. This only goes to show that even in the US, the tradition of senators chosen by state legislators was maintained for more than a hundred years before it was changed.
Our constitution has been in use for five years. To change it to have senators elected directly by the people is risky. Legislation will be based on personal interests rather than expertise.
The Senate also risks being turned into a rubber stamp for some person or group. Bicameralism will be no more.
As for my claim that some members of the Senate and House are putting their heads together for something devious, anyone who has followed the latest House debate would have gathered an inkling of it.
My letter would not have been allowed to be published if there were no grounds to it.
