Graphic designed turned street artist Tum Mamafaka and his equally talented illustrator pal Suntur toss out a challenge to Thailand’s young artists by urging them to put their ideas forward for the upcoming “Tiger Translate Presents Godung Logo Competition”.
A decade ago, young Thais showed little interest in art, considering it a niche market controlled by a small circle of artists. With a greater availability of exhibition space and a more relaxed approach to design, that perception has radically changed in recent years helped along by the possibility for exposure on social networks sites. Street art in particular, has enjoyed rapid growth, with the young appreciating the freedom to express ideas on the city’s walls and sidewalks.
Pattapanee Ekahitanond, marketing manager for Tiger Beer offers some details about the background of Tiger’s newest project. “Tiger Beer has a unique brand character. We value the street art culture for its influence on young people who love art and music,” he says. “That’s why we’ve created “Tiger Translate Presents Godung Logo Competition” as a platform for the young generation to express their skills and show off their creative potential.
“We’re looking for designs for the ‘Godung’ logo. Godung, which means warehouse, is a youthful community of art and music that stages creative happenings all year round. The contest has as its concept ‘Tiger+Art+Music’ and is divided into two categories. The first is a professional division is for veteran artists and graphic designers while the second is an amateur division open to young talent and members of the public who enjoy designing. The winners will be rewarded with a trip to enjoy a world-class music and art experience in Australia.”
Tum Mamafaka – or Pharuephon Mukdasanit as his mum knows him - and Yozanun Wutigonsombutkul aka Suntar are members of the judging committee.
Pharuephon is Thailand’s best-known street artist and is instantly recognisable from his “Mr Hell Yeah” character with its furry body and enormous round eyes.
Illustrator Yozanun Wutigonsombutkul made his name with his signature “Hand Note” style that combines distinctive drawings and watercolour techniques with minimal communication. He’s also created the logo for the competition, interpreting the “Tiger+Art+Music” concept in a design he’s titled “Tiger X-Ray”,
“For me, the tiger represents young people who are bold enough to take on challenges. Here, we’re talking about young people who lead a lifestyle to which art and music are integral, so when this tiger is x-rayed, we see a variety of musical instruments instead of internal organs. When one of the instruments is absent, life malfunctions just as it would with the loss of an organ,” he says.
