We live in times of great and turbulent change. Leadership in the world today totters on uncertainty, on threats of ursurpation, and in grave need of good governance. His Majesty in 1975 called for good governance in public administration and in corporate systems. His Majesty subsequently proposed “Sufficiency Economy” as a balanced way of living. In the late 1990s His Majesty offered his people the counsel of perseverance through his evocative translation of Phra Mahachanok.
My earnest wish for Thailand and the world is that, as we mark another anniversary of His Majesty’s coronation, we may follow his supreme example of good governance and balanced leadership to the effect, as Thomas Gray expresses in his immortal poem “The Elegy”:
Th’ applause of list’ning senates to command,
The threats of pain and ruin to despise,
To scatter plenty o’er a smiling land,
And read their hist’ry in a nation’s eyes.
Long live His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
