Marvel how they made 'Young Bao'

"Young Bao", the Carabao tribute film commemorating the songs-for-life band's 30 years in the business, is now in theatres, trailing a string of bad feelings and confusion behind it.

It’s quite a difference from the rosy glow of the original announcement, at which frontman Yuenyong “Ad Carabao” Ophakul declared his support and his popular rocker nephew Atiwara “Toon Bodyslam” Kongmalai was picked to play him in the film.
Soon after that, Toon pulled out of the project amid rumours that his label, GMM Grammy, was unhappy about having rookie director Yuthtagon “R-Jo” Sookamonktapa in charge. The lead role was quickly recast with newcomer actor Thana Iamniyom, but then the producers started playing musical chairs. “Young Bao” shifted from Nonzee Nimitbutr to Pornchai Hongrattanaporn to Tanit Jittanukul.
None of these disruptions came close to the fundamental problem of who pays the bills. Director R-Jo had envisioned a blitz for the opening that would Bt200 million – the movie’s premiere plus a national tour by Carabao. But a “main sponsor” pulled out too, prompting a lawsuit from R-Jo.
So Ad didn’t even attend the Bangkok premiere, claiming he simply couldn’t make it and dismissing a rumour that he and R-Jo don’t see eye to eye.
Meanwhile the movie has garnered mixed reviews on the social media, some saying it’s a must-see for any Carabao fan and others giving it a wide yawn. Regardless, the famously laid-back Ad doesn’t think the film’s lukewarm start will affect the band’s ongoing tour.
“We were lucky to find a new sponsor and carry on,” he says. “Maybe we had a bit of difficulty in terms of public relations, but everything’s okay now. The fans can just attend a ‘Khao Pan Dee Concert’ instead.”
As of the press time, he still hadn’t seen the flick, but insists he will soon. “I’d like all Carabao fans to go see the movie. I talked to Lek [guitarist Preecha Chanapai], he said it’s okay.”
Well, if Lek says it’s okay, it must be okay.
