Another coup would lead to civil war

Re: "Legal process was a set-up", Letters, June 7.

It may be time for Somsak Pola, as well as Vint, Richard and James, to accept that their arguments for and against Thaksin are pointless. Somsak says Thaksin should return and be re-tried by a three-tier court system. I assume he means the same one that tried Thaksin about his assets concealment.
Come on, guys, we all know that what we have is a power struggle between the good ol’ boys, who have the Army behind them, and this upstart that purchased Isaan with giveaways. In the past, situations such as this were settled with a coup. However the red shirts are pretty well organised and very determined, and it appears that a coup now just might drive the country into civil war. I’m sorry to tell you this, but all the various people that you admire on either side are corrupt, or at best tolerate corruption. That is how this entire scenario was conceived.
What you need is an international tribunal to come in here, be given absolute power, and let it clean up the rot on both sides by any means necessary. Sound far-fetched? Well, you can do it now voluntarily and with some choices, or you can do it later after the shooting starts and it gets bad enough that one superpower or another has to come in and force it on you.
This is the reality, gentlemen, and all of your gentlemanly debates about who is righteous and who isn’t won’t change a thing because no one involved is righteous. What is happening is always the outcome when reason, fair play and honest concern for the people are cast aside and greed consumes the entire government of a nation. If memory serves me, I believe this is what happened with a few of your neighbours and is ongoing in another. What makes everyone in this country believe that it can’t happen here?
