Painter Princess dies in France

HSH Princess Marsi, 82, was esteemed for her surrealist art

A gifted painter whose intricate surrealist imagery earned admirers around the world, Her Serene Highness Princess Marsi Sukhumbhand Paribatra died early Tuesday at her home in the south of France. She was 82.
The daughter of His Royal Highness Prince Chumbhot of Nagor Svarga and MR Pantip Paribatra spent most of her life overseas. Her art brought her international celebrity and exhibitions in Paris and Provence, though she remained little known in her homeland.
Partially paralysed by a stroke in 2004 that stopped her from ever painting again, the Princess wanted to establish a charitable foundation in Thailand, but French law would have made money transfers difficult. So her cousin, MR Jisnuson Svasti, helped her set up the Marsi Foundation in 2009.
A year later it hosted an exhibition of her work in Bangkok that raised funds for artists in need, art students and stray animals.
In January this year the Queen’s Gallery hosted the exhibition “L’art de Marsi”. The Princess was unable to attend due to illness.
