Bollywood fans and electronic-music junkies get a double treat tomorrow when DJs Zubair and Xunny Dey take over the dance floor for a night of absolute mayhem at Bed Supperclub.
Hailing from Dubai, DJ Zubair is famous, cutting-edge and much sought-after. His popularity stems from an exceptional style of mixing music that invariably result in power-packed dance floors all over the globe.
Bangkok’s own Xunny Dey is known best for his hip-hop tracks with Bollywood flair, such as “Electric City” and “Holdin’ On”. At the party tomorrow we’ll see Xunny working the deck and hone his musical alter ego as a DJ. He sat down and had a talk with us.
What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
Hip-hop and R&B music was what really inspired me to get involved in the club scene, but, growing up with an Indian background, Bollywood music is second nature to me, and that’s what I spin as well.
I was 18 and in college when I realised I wanted to be a DJ. After doing that for seven years, I decided it was time to pursue my passion for production and take a chance with making beats, composing, doing vocals and performing as an artist. I now do both, depending on what kind of gigs I’m offered.
Is music your full-time job or a hobby?
Music used to be my full-time job. Now I do it for events, which allows me to manage other businesses while still pursuing my love of music. Music also gives me a chance to reinvent myself every time I need a new shift and do something exciting without having to change career path!
Who’s your idol in music?
Timbaland, Pharell, Will.I.Am and AR Rahman – these producers have such distinct sounds and I like to be inspired by them in my productions and incorporate their music in my sets.
How would you describe your sound?
When I produce a track it always starts with a drum beat. If it makes me want to move, that’s when I continue working on it. It’s got to be something fresh, upbeat and with elements of hip-hop, electro and dance.
What have you been working on lately?
For the second EP I’ve completed three tracks, called “Electronica Punjabi”, “On and On” – which are the dance tracks for the EP – and “Chameleon”, which I’m finishing a video for.
Also in the pipeline is a track called “No Goodbyes”, which is in the later stages of production. I’m also working on a full Hindi vocal track “Aa Bhi Ja” (“Come to Me”), which is a blend of drum and bass and merengue beats, which I’m really excited about!
Aside from that, I’m always producing new beats to explore new styles and write to them when I hear a sound that clicks!
Would you make a song in Thai?
Yes, I sing mostly in English and blend in elements of Hindi. I’m currently working on a track that’s full-on Hindi, which I wrote with a friend. I will probably produce a Thai R&B or club song with a blend of English when I find the right Thai artist to collaborate with.
You’re also a DJ. Do you have a residency?
I’m mostly booked for events now. Recently I’ve been spinning for events and parties at Bed Supperclub, Grease, Axis and Spin and Indus.
What’s happening at Bed tomorrow night?
It’s a night not to be missed! Rise Productions and Masala magazine have four different DJs in two separate rooms. So, whether you’re looking to hear some house, electro, Bollywood, bhangra, hip-hop or dance, this is the place to be.
Also, Bed is shutting down, so this is a perfect party to attend for a final memorable experience at Bangkok’s finest nightclub.
