What happens to seized drugs?

Whenever when I read news of arrested drug-dealers, I am always curious as to where the drugs seized from the dealer go.
Are they burnt to ashes or destroyed by other means? Are they sent to another agent to be sold furtively? It’s very suspicious when you think what the police might be involved in nowadays. Is the drug problem that still remains a consequence of the police doing nothing or the police being drug dealers?
