Today's lesson: it's better to lie

Re: "Ethics and the law play second fiddle", Editorial, July 31.

A picture of an underage actress taking drugs went viral on the Internet. Almost immediately her father called a press conference to apologise to the public – expecting the brouhaha to end.
However, the media did not stop there. Some even subsequently published the young actress’s name – despite the fact that she is a minor whose rights are protected by law.
To add even more twist to the story, a big politician and a narcotics police chief paraded the child at a high-profile press conference, saying the girl did not take drugs. The politician even claimed, “She’s clean.”
Hence, it looks like the father’s attempt to teach his daughter that honesty is important has failed. Instead, the politician and the police have convinced the kid that lying through your teeth is a better way. That they are a better example to her than her dad.
My questions: What can our society learn from this? Or is it just another uneventful, easily forgettable incident?
