War: a no-brainer for the US

Re: "US needs reminding of its own obscenities", Letters, August 28.

It is possible to see Russia’s point in not abandoning an old ally in Syria, although that does not make Bashar al-Assad any more palatable. But instead to line up behind al-Qaeda in Syria as an option? Are they kidding us? That is “out of the frying pan and into the fire”.
Opinion polls show that a vast majority of Americans want no part in Syria’s problems at all. But there is another element that will prevail: the October cliffhanger. The US government will reach its debt limit by mid-October and it might be unable to meet financial obligations after that, so, as usual, a new war would be the perfect way to distract from the real obscenity – obscene US debt.
The chemical weapons of mass destruction are the chemical imbalances in the brains of US officials, generals and admirals.
