Cleaning up the mess isn't the same as an apology

Re: "Not only America and the Nazis", Letters September 7.

Does it make it better for America and Nazi Germany that others too used chemicals in war? The problem is that democratic America has sided with dictators who use chemical weapons.
The point is not to count all the users of chemical weapons, but show who has taken responsibility, regretted, apologised, and taught true lessons so it doesn’t happen again. Germany has, the US has not. Still, America is shameless enough to lecture others about chemical weapons, weapons of mass destruction, nuclear weapons and terrorism and democracy.
The US is now cleaning the soil in the Da Nang area that it polluted with Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. But that is not a part of confession or a show of regret – it’s part of America’s effort to get access to a naval base in Cam Ranh. America has to go a round or two with itself before it can get any respect from thinking people around the world.
