High-speed rail is not efficient allocation of resources

Ref: "Improve supply side policies to sustain growth: BOT governor", September 20.

I agree with Bank of Thailand Governor Prasarn Trairatvorakul, who said that innovation and resource reallocation are key to breaking through barriers to economic and social development and setting the country on a sustainable growth path.
On the issue of resource reallocation, I think it’s too much to borrow Bt2 trillion for the country’s infrastructure development projects, such as the Bangkok-Hua Hin high-speed train route, which seems not worth the investment of Bt110 billion. Because passengers can easily and conveniently travel by bus or van.
If they travel as a family by car, there’s even more cost saving.
The government should take the borrowing of Bt110 billion to invest in human resources especially disadvantaged children.
In addition to reducing the disparity of income, it helps to lower the middle-income trap of the country. Furthermore, it assists the country in meeting uninterrupted economic growth.
The high-speed train is not the key factor directing the people to have ability and efficiency in production and income (the future of the country), but it is the quality of education that children can access. No government dares to invest large scale for them, despite it being a vital means to solve the problem at its core.
