Voters should be allowed to reject all candidates

Ref: "Not much of a choice for Americans", Letters, September 20.

When I wrote that US voters (and all other voters) needed the option of “none of the above” (NOTA) on ballots for top elected leaders, Eric Bahrt wrote in response that some US states do have “no preference” – which is not the same thing.
NOTA means, “I vote against all of the candidates and I reject all of them”. If voters in democracies were to have the option of NOTA and if NOTA votes were to outnumber the votes for each and every candidate, then and only then would political parties get the message. NOTA should be required by law on every ballot in US presidential elections, and if Eric wants a more-than-50-per-cent US voting result, then NOTA might just provide it.
