SIAM CENTER once again demonstrates its boundless energy with the launch of “Trends of AW 2013/14”, a new exhibition dedicated to the latest in design, fashion, hair and makeup that’s spanning the first floor of the mall until October 31.
For the design aspect, the mall is collaborating with Wallpaper magazine to present 19 outstanding design and art pieces with a handmade concept. The works, by both world-renowned and local upcoming designers and artists, encapsulate long-cherished traditions and secret techniques.
Inspired by the intricacy of Buddhist sculptural works, Anon Pairot comes up with an aluminium side table with a silk-like flow he’s aptly named “Krapong” meaning “skirt”. He took an axis machine tool normally used for moulding in industrial production to create this unique form.
Belgian designers Pieter Compernol and Stephanie Grusenmeyer from the furniture brand P Tendercool are known the world over for their hand-made furniture and artisanal skills. PT40, a dining chair that taken the duo a year to develop, has a base made from sand cast, hand-brushed brass while the shell is made using the latest plywood bending technique that allows a sheet of wood to be shaped into any imaginable form. It’s finished with hand-stitched maroon leather.
“Analog”, Aor Sutthiprapha’s collection of Bauhaus-inspired geometric ceramic tableware is covered in brightly coloured hand-painted dots, a repetitive and time-consuming process the artist says is her way of meditating.
Pattani native Emsophian Benjametha wants to prove that southern Thailand is as important a ceramic producer as the North. His ceramic urn “La Nostalgie” boasting the Arabic alphabet represents his Muslim origins while the shape and style is inspired by Malayu art.
Yangon-based French designer Patrick Rober uses traditional Myanmar lacquerware techniques for his “Diaphane”, a set of trays made out of woven and softened bamboo threads and coated with natural lacquer resin.
The designer team at Thinkk Studio experiment with cement and wood to create a minimalist wood lamp. Fashion designer Ek Thongprasert collaborates with textile and home decorative brand Beyond Living to create clothes for both men and women using fabric made out of woven plastic rope and Chaiyan Thotead of the Immortal Classique makes porcelain doll dressed in outfits from Kloset’s latest collection A Girl’s Best Friend.
Liese & Essential look at the trends for the coming cool season with a live salon offering hair treatments and hands-on tips from leading hairstylists.
“Brown is the colour this season whether it’s cocoa, coffee, mocha or just plain brown with purple or blonde highlights,” says hairstylist Somporn Tirin. “Retro and modern-classic styles are coming back and long, voluminous curls are the height of fashion along with easy, feminine styles that can be done at home like pony tails and low buns.”
For its fashion showcase, Siam Center has joined up with the Bangkok Fashion Society to present a photo exhibition featuring shots of various different people from all walks of life, whose style, personality, and character are perceived as inspirational, and whose interaction with the clothes give off brand new vibes.
Makeup artist Nick Barose presents four key trends inspired by the world’s
fashion destinations in his live makeup salon. The “New York” look features funky details like art-inspired designs at the outer brows, while the “British” revolves around face paint and a striking contrast between naughty pastels a la English rose and bold, thick eyebrows.
The “French” appearance is interpreted as sophisticated colour combinations, as well as an interplay of textures and matte colour juxtaposed with metallic shimmer while the “Asia” look emphasises a rich abundance of cultures translated into disconnected colour and uneven textural mixes, as well as edgy, rule-breaking use of eyeliner that extends even to the ear.
